Makeunder… Thoughts? Opinions?
Friday, January 20, 2012 Prepare yoursef, this "before" photo is bit scary...

So, right off the bat, these bases are ah-mazing! The plaid shades however (which have been loosely constructed with yarn), not so much.
I'm planning to reconstruct the shades and recover them with a simple, bone white fabric to match the white of the bases. This will let the fantastic red, drip glaze take centre stage.
My question... Is the scale of the shades working for you?
I'm torn. Some days I feel like they're way too tall for the lamp. Other days, I love that about them.
What do you think? Should I trim down the shades to a more proportional scale, or does the fact that they're huge make the lamps that much more interesting?

I love the scale but agree that the plaid is nutty. I think a plain shade, even in the same size, will look less grand because the plaid has the optical illusion of making something look bigger (like my butt, in a plaid skirt). I can't wait to see what you do!!
Ha! Yeah, maybe you're right!
I love the idea of making the shades a more neutral color and letting the lamps shine (no pun intended) but IMO, the shades are too tall - kind of out of proportion to the size and shape of the base.
Great find!! Though the shades are tall, once they are switched out to all white, I think they will take on a modern, architectural feel---especially in a space with high ceilings. Have you considered painting the wood out to white (high gloss) as well? That would be UBER COOL!
I agree that when u switch out to a white you should evaluate the size issue again as it might feel okay without cutting it down. The plaid has a strong vertical red in it which makes it feel even more tall. Good luck!
Hi Lia
I love the shape of the lamp & the size of the shade is a bit "wonky" but I kinda dig it. I think it's a funky kinda different that will catch people's eye.
Let us know what you decided!

There's something awesome about these lamps - even the shades. Be careful of the proportions if you decide to shorten. Shade or base should be the longer proportion - never equal - 5/8ths-3/8ths or so - like your lamps on the right on this page.
