What (Most) Decorating Shows Do Wrong
Monday, May 30, 2011 Before you send me a whack of nasty emails, let me start by saying that these are general statements; they do not apply to every program or every designer on television.
In fact, some do plenty right, like the lovely Sarah Richardson. But that’s not what this post is about.
So, what is that those other shows do terribly wrong?
1. They leave the most important people out of the conversation
The homeowners! How can you send them away, yet simultaneously create a space that will accurately reflect their values, distinctive tastes and unique personalities?
You can’t.
2. They complete the project in record time
First of all, a room should never be “done”. It should change and evolve over time as you do. You’ll always wind up disappointed when you approach your decorating as a sprint, not a marathon.
Phenomenal design takes time. Period.
3. They choose furnishings based on a skewed value system
It’s not about creativity, exceptional quality or what’s best for each specific homeowner. It’s about advertising, sponsorship & appealing to the masses (read: big box brands).
Your home deserves more consideration.
Rant officially over. What's your take on the subject?

Agreed- I am sure I am behind the times, but I just saw, "Mr. Goodwill Hunting" the other day and maybe fell a little in love- or a lot. I love a man (or person) who isn't afraid to get dusty at second hand stores and make something amazing and guaranteed to be unique!
I do agree with those statements.
I don't know if you've mentioned her before but I love Emily Henderson's show Secrets from a Stylist on HGTV because she does incorporate the home owners with a style diagnostic. Her team does get things done fast, but I understand time limits and homeowners needing the space back soon. Her first season shows how the room can evolve through from one style to another. The next season is said to have only 1 style example but with more time for her to share other ideas or secrets. She also shops all over. She loves flee markets and stores with used items but also uses new items too. It's my most recent favorite show. :)
Wow Lia...are you reading my mind????
My favorite show to hate is Trading Spaces..They seem to do a marathon of ugly decor, cheap painted pressed board furniture and horrible futon like sofas with those ridiculously uncomfortable low bolster back cushions.
Ok...I could rant more, but I'll say goodnight for now.
You are my new hero ;->

Ha! Thanks Janet!
Glad to know I'm not alone on this one!
Hi Lia,
I totally agree. I hate seeing home design shows where the end result looks pretty BUT have zero functionality!

I think it is number 2 that bothers me the most. I hate seeing a room filled with useless nicknacks that have no meaning to the people living there. Bought just to fill a space and make a room 'finished'. I agree that in my home no room is ever done.
