What Fashion Teaches Us About Interiors

1. Everything Old Is New Again

The wide leg jean is once again making its appearance in fashion. Its popped up every so often through the decades, with a simple update here or there, and here we are, welcoming it once again with open arms.

Similarly, the vintage accessories that some would prefer to see remain in the past (not me!) are making a strong appearance in modern decor. They are looked upon, by a new generation, as time worn pieces to treasure.

2. One Size Does NOT Fit All

Oh, how I wish I could pull off this most-delicious, giant scarf… But, that privilege is reserved for the lovely amazon women of the world, not shorties like me. So, I admire from afar and relish the fact that I can rock a pair of platforms without towering over all the men in the room. If it's not right for you, don't force it.

The same goes for statement pieces in your home. Sure, oversized, black & gold pendants might be right for this kitchen, but maybe not yours. Play to your strengths and attempt to understand what statement will improve your space, not take away from it.

3. Texture, Texture, Texture

The most dynamic outfits, just like the most dynamic rooms, are layered with multiple textures that play off of each other to add depth, interest and character.

Layering plush velvets with soft silks and nubby rugs with faux fur throws adds a wonderful, tactile quality to a space and significantly ups the cozy-factor.

4. Don't Compete For Attention

My Mother taught me this… If you're gonna show off your gorgeous gams, cover up those tata's and vice versa. When everything is screaming for attention, you attract the wrong kind.

The same is true of interiors. Pick one focal point and only one. Otherwise, you're eye won't know where to land. Having multiple focal points in one space results in an overwhelming, head-spinning mess. This doesn't mean you can't have interesting vignettes scattered throughout a room, it just means that each of them must take a back seat to one clear point of focus.

5. Timeless Trumps Trendy

What could be more timeless than tailored, dark denim, paired with a classic stripe and neutral blazer? When we look on the classic beauties of the past, the ones that stand out are those who embodied a classic, timeless sense of style… Think Jackie O, Princess Diana & Audrey Hepburn.

When selecting finishes for the fixed elements of your home, this concept will serve you well. Choosing to keep your fixed elements simple (but not boring) will allow you to inject personality with trendier accessories. Accessories can easily be changed out as time passes and your tastes evolve. Tile, cabinets and counter tops… Not so much.

Excellent examples! I can't pull off some of this fashion either - especially those super-wide leg pants :(
